The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) represents about 100,000 workers in the United States and Canada. Members generally work in the construction industry. Originally, the Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators of America (BPDA) unionized in the 1920s. IUPAT has local unions called district councils, which perform most of IUPAT’s services. The union is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

Painters and other allied trades work on new and old structures by applying paints and other finishes. They are often involved in construction projects and renovations. Apprenticeships last four years, involving a day of classroom instruction and 6,400 hours of on-the-job training. During this time, students study various safety subjects, tools, and preparation. During the apprenticeship, students also learn about the different types of paints, the equipment used for painting, and how to handle them safely.
