A lot of people don’t realize that when they buy a computer, there is a specific type of storage device that comes with it, called an Optical Worm Disk (OWD). As the name implies, these disks use an optical path to spin the information, rather than a mechanical one.
This is very helpful in data storage because using a mechanical drive requires additional steps to protect the information stored within the device – like keeping it in an airtight container so that it doesn’t spill over and damage the drive itself.
Worm Disk Overview
The other major difference between a traditional hard disk and an OWD is that it uses a different process to spin the information than a hard drive, which makes it even more resistant to mechanical shock what is worm storage. The other major advantage to using an OWD is that it requires much less maintenance to keep it working properly, and the data stored on it can be recovered much easier when problems do occur.
There are several different types of OWDs that can be used in modern day computers, including the SMART disk (self-monitoring, analysis, and reporting) and the magnetic disk (magneto-optical disks). SMART disks are usually formatted by the end user, although they may also be formatted by the computer itself if it is pre-programmed to do this.
Magnetic disks work in a similar fashion to a SMART disk, but they use a different method to write the data. The only major difference between the two is the fact that SMART disks are capable of self-monitoring, while a magnetic disk cannot. Because of this, a magnetic disk is often considered the better option for a desktop computer, even though the SMART disk will work on a laptop.
Worm drives can store extremely large amounts of information and can be an excellent choice for a backup solution. The data is never lost from a worm disk, but it does have a significantly lower storage capacity than some of the other solutions on the market.
One of the most popular options for storing large amounts of information, however, is the magneto-optical disk. This is particularly useful for storing large amounts of information on a laptop that will not be connected to the rest of the computer system.
